THE RED
LETTERS

Calling the crowd to join his disciples, he said; "Anyone who intends to come with me has to let me lead, you're not in the driver's seat, I am!" Mark 8:34 (MSSG)

Blaise Pascal (1623 - 1662) was a French mathematician, physicist, inventor, writer and Christian philosopher. He was a child prodigy educated by his father, a tax collector in Rouen. Pascal's earliest work was in the natural and applied sciences where he made important contributions to the study of fluids and clarified the concepts of pressure and vacuum by generalizing the work of Evangelista Torricelli. Pascal also wrote in defense of the scientific method. But I guess most people who read about Pascal read past the Christian Philosopher label for his life. In fact, Pascal was on fire for the Lord since he was 23 years old!
     He wrote on a piece of paper a brief description of his experience with the Lord that night. He carried that piece of paper with him for the rest of his life; it was found sewn into the lining of his coat after his death. On that paper, he wrote the following words;
From about half-past ten at night to about half after midnight-fire! O God of Abraham, God of Isaac, God of Jacob-not the God of the philosophers and the wise. The God of Jesus Christ who can be known only in the ways of the Gospel. Security-feeling-joy-tears of joy. Amen.
That prayer is of a person whose life became totally committed to the God of the universe! How does that happen? Because, LIFE IS TOUGH...... I know! I doubt that any of us would want to trade places with a Seventeenth Century person like Pascal. No phones, no grocery store, no clean water, no flushing toilets etc. But if we are willing to listen to, and live by, the Red Letters of Christ, God will carry us through any challenge!

JUNE 2018

THE RED
LETTERS

And Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, "You lack one thing: go, sell all that you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me."

A secular Jewish Country-and-Western disc jockey in Nashville, Tennessee. During a radio interview he was conducting with author and theologian Jim Wallis, he happened to say, "So, you're one of those Red-Letter Christians--you know--who's really into those verses in the New Testament that are in red letters!"
            Jim answered, "That's right!" And with that answer, he spoke for all of us. By calling ourselves Red-Letter Christians, we are alluding to the fact that in several versions of the New Testament, the words of Jesus are printed in red. In adopting this name, we are saying that we are committed to living out the things that He said. Of course, the message in those red-lettered verses is radical, to say the least. And, we must never discount the power in the other letters as well. God's Word is complete and the Red Letters are fulfillment of the Word.
            Those Red Letters call us to be merciful, which has strong implications for how we think about other people's behavior. When Jesus tells us to love our enemies, he probably means we shouldn't kill them. Most important, if we take Jesus seriously, we will realize that meeting the needs of the poor is a primary responsibility for His followers. Figuring out just how to relate those radical Red Letters in the Bible to the complex issues in the modern world will be difficult, but that's what we must try to do. Gandhi once said that "Everybody in the world knows what Jesus was teaching in those verses--except Christians!"
             I think we can prove him wrong!
