FOOD PROGRAM FOR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

What is the Backpack Program?

The Roscommon County Backpack Program began with

Mary Scott Rohm, a St. Vincent DePaul volunteer in Prudenville.  She became aware of the fact that many children were getting meals all week but were not eating on the weekend.  She researched this and found a nationwide program called Blessings in a Backpack.

The goal of the program is to provide children at risk of hunger with non-perishable food items that meet their weekend nutritional needs.  Depending on the annual need, student participation runs from 50-100 children.  The food is delivered every 2 weeks on Tuesday to both Roscommon and Collins Elementary Schools where volunteers prepare backpacks for the children to take home every Friday.
